Why Sole Proprietorships and Your Personal Social Security Number Don't Help You Build Business Credit

sole proprietor

Sole Proprietorships using your personal social security number are not good for building Business Credit

You won't be separating your personal from the business - they are the same!

As you know, if you have a sole proprietorship, you have no personal shield from liability. Some small business owners don't care about that issue because the type of business that they are in is extremely unlikely to create any liability.

If you are trying to build business credit, you CAN build trade credit with your sole proprietorship with local vendors. You can also build credit with major, national retailers.

Just keep in mind that you aren't building business credit that is separate and distinct from your personal credit. You are personally on the hook for any purchases, and almost all of this credit will show up on your personal credit report. Nearly all of the national retailers will require a personal guarantee as a pre-requisite to granting you the credit. This means that your personal credit will have to be in good shape for you to get many of these approvals.

There are certainly exceptions to this. However, in the main, you aren't developing "business credit" as separate from your personal credit. You are simply applying for credit, yourself, just like anyone else (in business or not) can, and your business name is also attached to it.

Aside from the liability issues, one of the main benefits of true "business credit", is that the credit that you obtain does not adversely affect your FICO score. For instance, if you charged up $35,000 worth of credit card debt personally, chances are it would noticeably depress your FICO score. However, if you rack up $35,000 worth of business credit debt that is under your Business Tax ID number, your FICO score is left intact. This is one of the key benefits that you miss out on by using your social security number with your sole proprietorship.
